The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the ‘interim’ suspension of its planned national carrier, Nigeria Air.
Nigeria Air which was unveiled by the Federal Government at the Farnborough Airshow in July was expected to resume operations in December.
The Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has however announced this evening that the Government decided that the national carrier is now suspended. There was no official reason given for the sudden decision.
The Nigeria Air was to be private sector-led, with the Federal Government to own not more than 5%. Its unveiling was met with huge criticisms at that time as some Nigerians said the whole process was shrouded in mystery.
Others questioned the reason why the airline was unveiled outside the shores of Nigeria and some wondered why a foreign company was ‘contracted’ to design the logo.
