Manchester United announce Champions League squad with Matteo Darmian a shock inclusion

The Italian is one of three right-backs involved alongside club captain Antonio Valencia and summer signing Diogo Dalot. Matteo Darmian has been included in Man United's Champions League squad.

The 28-year-old, who made just five league starts last season, is on the fringes of the first-team and admitted he came close to leaving the club this summer.

Napoli and Inter Milan both had concrete interest during the transfer window and Mourinho even conceded that he was free to leave but a deal failed to materialise.

He played the full 90 minutes in the opening day win over Leicester but has not featured since.

Talented midfielder Andreas Pereira is also involved after his emergence into the first-team.

Striker Marcus Rashford is not on the list but he does not need to be registered because he is an English player born after January 1 1997.

United kick-start their Champions League campaign with a trip to Young Boys on October 19 before hosting Juan Mata's former side Valencia.

They then face a double header of fixtures against Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus with Paul Pogba also lining up for a reunion against his former side.

United haven't progressed further than the quarter-finals since 2011 when a Lionel Messi masterclass helped Barcelona run out 3-1 winners in the final.
