International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute an International Electoral Observer with over two-decade experience in election monitoring process has raised concern over the inability of the independent national electoral commission INEC to access funds to continue the preparation for the up commission elections of 2019.
One of the observers Ann Jonesnational network coordinator WANEP – The Gambia said the delayby the legislatures may hinder INEC and other electoral bodies from fulfilling their responsibilities as prescribed by law.
This was disclosed during a press briefing on IRI and NDI second pre-election statement on preparations for 2019 general elections in Abuja. Jones also says federal government of Nigeria should also security operatives maintain highest level of professionalism ‘security service should re-frame from activities that can be seen as being partial’.
Africa Director Transformation John Tomaszewski, added that through this assessment mission IRI and NDI express solidarity with the Nigerian people commitment to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation.
“We are in Nigeria now because the pre-election environment is critical to the overall process,” said Robert Benjamin one of the observers.” The assessment seeks to support Nigerian efforts to make the 2019 elections participatory, transparent and credible”
The group also shun against vote buying and urge INEC to enforce laws and measures in accordance to electoral laws to punish offenders. IRI and NDI have organized over 200 international election observation missions around the globe, earning a reputation for impartiality and professionalism.
The IRI and NDI mission to Nigeria will conduct its activities in accordance with the declarations of principles for international elections observation and the code of conduct adopted by the united nations in 2005 and will base its findings and recommendations on Nigerian laws and on international standard for elections.
All activities will be conducted on a strictly known partisan basis and without interfering in the election basis.
