Passenger flies with gun from US to Japan undetected

The US Transportation Security Administration has acknowledged that a passenger bound for Tokyo passed through security in Atlanta with an undetected gun.

"TSA has determined standard procedures were not followed and a passenger did in fact pass through a standard screening TSA checkpoint with a firearm at Atlanta International Airport on the morning of January 3,” it said in a statement.

The passenger notified Delta Airlines officials after landing at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.

The agency said it “will hold those responsible appropriately accountable”.

No further details were released.

The screening took place amid the ongoing government shutdown during which TSA workers aren’t being paid.
